But wait, there's more...
Editing and Proof Reading
One of my artist heroes, Ed Kienholz, used to drive around in a truck with a logo that proclaimed "Ed Kienholz - Expert", and would offer his services as plumber, carpenter, mechanic, etc. I do not live by my art alone - with a PhD in Applied Mathematics and several publications in the field, as well as my extensive experience, research and reading in the Arts and Humanities as an artist and musician, I am regularly employed to proof read and edit academic texts ranging from book manuscripts to theses and papers for publication in subjects ranging from Psychology and Sociology to Ecology to Nuclear Physics.
Repairing Musical Instruments
I am also a musician. Although I underwent the obligatory childhood music lessons, and became fairly proficient on both piano and violin, the bug did not truly bite until I discovered electric instruments and rock music (my parents viewed anything other than classical music as noise), and particularly progressive rock, hard rock and psychedelia. I promptly put aside the fuddy-dud instruments, first in favour of the inevitable electric guitar and then I discovered the electric bass guitar in both fretted and fretless forms, which became a consuming passion forever more. I've played bass for over 40 years and have performed with many bands covering a wide range of musical styles, from French cabaret to prog-rock to blues to jazzy folk music and a dash of punk. Being on an artist's budget meant learning how to do my own repairs and adjustments and, since I love tinkering and have a Masters degree in electronics and am also a bit of a perfectionist, I began working on other musicians' equipment: I setup, repair and modify/customise stringed instruments, acoustic and electric, and service and adjust valve driven instrument amplifiers.
Designing and Making New Musical Instruments
I like to combine my passions and have started to make instrument-artworks - unique, once-off creations that are both visual statements and practical, playable instruments. This ties in with my other sculptural work, all of which is founded in my desire to recycle and repurpose obsolete or junk objects into something meaningful. The two main instruments I've made so far both started life as worn-out and somewhat abused relics found in pawn shops. Both were transformed unrecognisably into water-themed statements: an electric guitar titled "The Fishwife" and my own electric fretless bass guitar titled "Undercurrent". They are used by the progressive/folk/rock band Fishwives, whose compositions have a strong watery current flowing through them.
Audio Recording, Mixing and Mastering
I have over 40 years' experience playing bass guitar, guitar, baglama and any other stringed instruments that have been brave enough to cross my path. Ever since I first began fiddling with musical instruments I have been recording the results, learning how to optimise those recordings and how to mix and master recorded music. This naturally led to recording and mixing music for the various bands I've played in, which gave me valuable experience. I now have the equipment and expertise to record solo artists and small ensembles and mix the resulting recordings. Although one should not master one's own mixes, I am available as a mastering engineer for other musicians. Please contact me to discuss rates and requirements.
Painting Restoration
Finally, as a professional artist I have to leave artworks on consignment at galleries, sometimes for years. Since they are moved around regularly, sometimes displayed, sometimes in storage, inevitably paintings get scuffed, dusty and scratched. Often I get artworks back from a gallery and have to quite extensively retouch, repair and generally restore the works before I can consign them to a new gallery. In one or two (luckily very rare!) extreme cases I have had to repair water and smoke damage and cracked frames. I am by now experienced and skilled in restoring minor damage to oil paintings, including smoke and water damage, tightening up canvases and retouching and varnishing paintings, and am able to offer these services to others - again, please contact me to discuss your requirements.
